MacOS Sierra update made my Apache's localhost and now is inaccessible. I can only access localhost/. But sub-folders under localhost// are not and a '403 forbidden access&. Download and Install Tomcat. UNZIP (right-click ⇒ Extract All) the downloaded file. This is for installing tomcat as a daemon on port 8080 but enable also port 80 by using a firewall redirection. It was tested on Mac OS 10.6 but should work also with 10.5. Edit /opt/local/share/java/tomcat6/conf/server.xml and add proxyport='80' URIEncoding='UTF-8' inside.

2021-04-06 Tomcat 10.0.5 Released

The Apache Tomcat Project is proud to announce the release of version 10.0.5of Apache Tomcat. This release implements specifications that are part of theJakarta EE 9 platform.

Applications that run on Tomcat 9 and earlier will not run on Tomcat 10without changes. Java EE based applications designed for Tomcat 9 and earliermay be placed in the $CATALINA_BASE/webapps-javaee directory andTomcat will automatically convert them to Jakarta EE and copy them to thewebapps directory. This conversion is performed using theApache Tomcatmigration tool for Jakarta EE tool which is also available as a separatedownload for off-line use.

The notable changes in this release are:

  • Fix a regression in 10.0.4 that meant that an error during an asynchronous read broke all future asynchronous reads associated with the same request instance.
  • Prevent concurrent calls to ServletInputStream.isReady() corrupting the input buffer.
  • Update the packaged version of Tomcat Native to 1.2.27 to pick up binaries built with OpenSSL 1.1.1k.

2015-03-17 Apache Standard Taglib 1.2.5 Released

The Apache Tomcat Project is proud to announce the release of version 1.2.5 ofthe Standard Taglib. This tag library provides Apache's implementation of the JSTL 1.2 specification.

Version 1.2.5 is a minor bug fix release reverting a change made in 1.2.1 where<c:import> modified the HTTP method during POST operations, and fixing anissues that resulted in an AccessControlException during startup unlesspermission was granted to read the accessExternalEntity property.

Apache is the most widely used web server software which is developed and maintained by the Apache Software Foundation. It is an open source software. Apache Tomcat is used to deploy Java Servlets and JSPs. So basically Apache is an HTTP Server, serving HTTP. Tomcat is a Servlet and JSP Server serving Java technologies.

Install Apache Tomcat 7 server

1st Step: Go to http://tomcat.apache.org ⇒ Download ⇒ Tomcat 7.0 ⇒ 7.0.{xx} (where {xx} denotes the latest release) ⇒ Binary distribution ⇒ Core.

Download the “tar.gz” package (e.g., “apache-tomcat-7.0.{xx}.tar.gz“). Next extract the tar.gz folder to the apache-tomcat-7.0.{xx} folder. Rename the folder to “tomcat” and copy the extracted folder.

Install Apache Tomcat Macos

Go the Applications folder, and paste the tomcat folder.

Configure the Apache Tomcat server

The following files in the /Applications/tomcat/conf folder will be edited in order to configure the server.

  • web.xml
  • context.xml
  • server.xml

Set the TCP Port number

The /Applications/tomcat/conf/server.xml file will be edited to change the port number which runs the apache tomcat server. The default port number the server runs is 8080. This can be run on the default port number if no other application is running on this port. If not you can change the port number by replacing 8080 as follows in the server.xml file (around Line 69).

You may choose any number between 1024 and 65535.

Enabling Directory listing

In order to enable directory listing the /Applications/tomcat/conf/web.xml file needs to be edited as follows. Change the value “false” to “true” in the parameter value under listings (around line 103).

Enabling Automatic Reload

Change the /Applications/tomcat/conf/context.xml file (around line 19) as follows. Insert the reloadable=”true” statement inside the context tag.

The configuration of the Apache Tomcat server is complete.

Start the Apache Tomcat server

To start the Apache Tomcat server, open a new terminal and change the working directory as follows.

Next type the following command in order to start the server.

If you receive an error saying “command not found” or “cannot start server”, do the following to change the permissions of the catalina.sh file. This should have execute permissions for the server to start.

Next run the following command again to start the server.

Now the server should start correctly and the terminal should display a message saying “Tomcat started”.
